This blog is brought to you by Drone Class, your drone trainer for flying in the open and special categories.
A drone with a C1 label (C1-Label / C1-Marking / C1 drone) is a drone weighing between 0 and 900 grams, approved under European legislation and suitable for use in the open category.
These drones offer better performance compared to the C0 marked drones. However, these drones still fall under low risk and there are few restrictions. This makes the drones with the C1 label very interesting.
Which drones have a C1 label?
Drones that currently carry the C1 label are:
When buying a drone, pay attention to whether it has a Cx label.
In which subcategory are C1 drones allowed to fly?
Drones with a C1 marking fall into this category Subcategory A1.
This is the subcategory for low-risk flights with light drones. The drone rules in this subcategory are more lenient than in subcategories A2 and A3.
What drone rules apply to C1 drones?
Many flights are permitted with drones with the C1 marking. It is permitted to fly over buildings and over people in open airspace.
Main rules for C1 drones of subcategory A1:
- Airspace: Only flights in open (uncontrolled) airspace are permitted
- Maximum flight altitude: 120 meters
- Flying in direct line of sight: The drone must always be in the pilot’s line of sight (VLOS, Visual Line of Sight)
- Flying over people: It is allowed to fly over some people, but not over crowds
- Flights over buildings: Permitted, subject to building owner approval
- Remote ID requirement: C1 drones must send remote ID
Requirements for the drone pilot of subcategory A1:
- Drone certificate: Pilots must hold an A1/A3 certificate, this is a basic certificate that can be easily purchased online
- Registration requirement: Every pilot must apply for an operator number; This number must be visible on the drone and is transmitted via Remote ID
Do you need a Remote ID for a C1 drone?
A Remote ID is required for drones marked C1:
- The operator registers with the LBA in Germany and receives an operator number by email
- The operator number must be visibly attached to the drone, for example on a sticker or sign
- The operator number must be entered in the drone settings
- During the flight, the drone automatically transmits the operator number and other identification data so that authorities can track the drone
Which drone license do you need for a C1 drone?
To fly a C1 drone, the A1/A3 certificate is required. This certificate serves as proof that you are familiar with European legislation on drone flights.
You can easily obtain the A1/A3 certificate online:
- Online course: You first complete an online course in which all drone rules are explained
- Online exam: After the course you start with the online exam
- Certificate: Once you pass, apply for the certificate and you can fly your C1 drone
